Brighton

Ok, j'ai finalement réussi à charger les photos! Donc voilà le Brighton d'il y a 3 semaines, très différent du Brighton d'hier. Pour avoir une idée, il suffit de remplacer le ciel bleu par un ciel gris et nuageux, rajouter une pluie battante et enlever 10°C!!!

I finally managed to upload the pictures! So here's Brighton 3 weeks ago, very different from Brighton yesterday. To get an idea, replace the blue sky by a cloudy, gloomy grey sky, add pouring rain and substract 10°C!!!

Voilà le Pavillon Royal, un palais orientalisant au milieu de la ville, un peu comme un OVNI qui se serait posé au hasard, mais très joli!

The Royal Pavillion, an oriental-ish palace right in the middle of the city, close to a UFO which would have landed there by mistake, but is still pretty!



Le front de mer, ses rambardes en vert pastel façon années 50 et le Brighton Pier, la jetée qui s'avance dans la mer.

L'autre jetée, qui après avoir été abandonnée pendant des années a été détruite par un incendie! Donc les plans de rénovation sont tombés à l'eau, tout comme la jetée...

The other pier, which was abandoned for years before burning down! So all rehabilitation plans collapsed, like the pier itself...


La jetée qui tient encore debout est occupée par un mini parc d'attraction, un peu rétro mais chouette, et un 'Palais du divertissement', avec des machines à sous, des jeux de hasards et d'arcade. C'est une atmosphère un peu irréelle, avec de la musique, des bip-bips, des diling-dilings et des loupiotes clignotantes de partout, alors que le calme plat de la mer est juste à côté!

The Pier which is still standing is home to a quaint but cute rollercoaster park and a 'Palace of Fun' with slot machines, arcade and casino games. The atmosphere is quite odd, with lots of music, beeps, dling-dlings when coins cascade for a jackpot, and blinking lights, knowing that the quietness of the sea is just outside!

Brighton has got two shopping areas known as North Laine (not a mistake!) and South Lane.
North Laine is full of tiny little streets bordered with jewellers shops, while South Lane is a long shopping street with funky stores. When I say funky, I mean it: here are a few signs you can find on the way...

Brighton est connu pour ses deux zones de shopping, North Laine and South Lane. North Laine est fait de petites rues étroites bordées d'échoppes de bijoutiers. South Lane est une rue commerçante avec des magasins "alternatifs". Alternatif, ça veut dire que j'ai pris en photos quelques devantures pas tristes...

Suite des opérations

Alors je n'ai pas réussi l'entretien pour être serveuse. Je suppose que trembler avec 5 assiettes dans les mains n'était pas très convaincant ;-)! Donc formation avec l'autre entreprise dans 2 jours. En même temps, j'ai de l'entraînement maintenant!
Ensuite, entretien d'embauche vendredi, donc je potasse les conseils du Careers Service (centre d'orientation) de la fac et le site de l'entreprise.
A part ça, hier j'étais de nouveau à Brighton, cette fois-ci pour un atelier karaté. C'était un cours avec un 8e dan. Au début, chaque ceinture (rouge, jaune, verte...) est un "kyu" (10e, 9e, 8e, etc...), puis après le 1er kyu vient la ceinture noire, et là on passe aux "dans". Et ça devient beaucoup plus difficile de passer au niveau suivant. Donc un 8e dan, c'est pas rien!!! Donc matinée très intéressante, même si pour une petite débutante comme moi, ça allait vite! Mais les membres du club plus avancés vont retenir ce qu'ils ont appris et l'enseigner plus tard, donc rien de perdu.
Ensuite on s'est balladé dans Brighton, qui est toujours aussi joli, mais qui était aussi pluvieux que possible. Tout comme Londres, d'ailleurs. Donc je suis rentrée trempée jusqu'à l'os, frissonante et rêvant d'un bon feu de bois dans une cheminée! Mais ça valait quand même le voyage!

First of all, I failed the interview with the catering company. I guess that shaking while holding 5 plates wasn't too convincing ;-)! So I'll do the training with the other company, in 2 days. At least I have trained a bit!
Job interview on Friday, so I'm going through the Careers Service's tips and the company's website.
Yesterday I went to Brighton again, this time for a karate seminar. It was a class with an 8th dan. When you start karate, each belt (red, yellow, green) is a "kyu" (10th, 9th, 8th...), then after the 1st kyu comes the black belt. The grades for black belts are "dans", and are much harder to get than kyus. So being an 8th dan is something! Very interesting morning, even if everything went quite fast for a little beginner like me! But the higher grades from the club will remember what we've learnt and teach it later on, so that's not really a problem.
Then we walked around Brighton, always pretty, but as rainy as it can get! The same in London. So I arrived back home chilled to the marrow, shivering and dreaming of a nice open fire! Still, the trip was worth it!

Serveuse or not serveuse....

Oui, j'ai survécu deux entretiens pour devenir serveuse pendant l'été. Le premier était pour la forme, j'ai dû faire mumuse avec des légumes en plastique et prouver que je peux les servir joliment avec fourchette et cuillère...
Aujourd'hui, c'était une autre histoire. 4 heures de formation, depuis dresser la table jusqu'au rangement. De quel côté servir, comment tenir 3 assiettes avec 2 mains, comment changer une bouteille de champagne de main quand on en a 2 sur les bras... Même si j'ai pas le job, au moins j'aurais appris quelque chose! Verdict demain matin...

Yes, I survived 2 job interviews to become a waitress over the summer. The first one was a joke, I had to play with plastic veggies and prove I could serve them on a plate with fork and spoon. Today was another story? 4 hours of training, from installing the table to clearing it at the end. On wich side to serve, how to hold 3 plates with two hands, how to pass a bottle of Champagne from one hand to another when you're holding two of them... Even if I don't get the job, I'll have learned some things! I'll know tomorrow morning...

Changements en perspective

Alors toujours pas de photos de Brighton (j'espère que Blogger va bien vouloir fonctionner correctement bientôt), mais pas mal de neuf. Je devrai déménager mi-juin, pour emménager (dans la même rue ;-)!!!) dans une coloc à 3. Avec des chambres de plus de 10m2, une vraie cuisine, une vraie salle de bain et même un salon :-)!!!! Et une machine à laver... Le luxe!!! Sinon, je cherche un petit job pour l'été, et j'ai presque trouvé, pour des agences de catering. Donc serveuse pour des évènements genre mariages, fêtes d'entreprise, ou les courses d'Epsom et de Windsor (oui, assez divers!). Ils ont l'air de chercher du monde, donc j'ai deux formations de prévu, demain et après-demain. A priori, à moins que je ne casse une assiette, je pourrai choisir entre 2 entreprises...
A part ça, je cherche aussi un vrai travail pour septembre, et je viens de décrocher mon premier entretien. Ca commence par des tests dans un centre d'évaluation, et si tout se passait bien, ça serait en market research (recherche marketing/statistique).
Ah, et il faut que je trouve un sujet de mémoire. J'ai un tuteur, que j'avais en cours et qui est très bien, maintenant il faut que je sache de quoi parler....

Still no pictures from Brighton (I hope Blogger is gonna work properly soon), but lots of news. I'm gonna move in mid-June (on the same street ;-)!) in a 3 bedroom flat. With over 10 sqm bedrooms, a real kitchen, a real bathroom, and even a living room :-)!!! And a washing machine... Luxurious!!! I'ms also looking for a summer job, and I found something with catering agencies. So that means waitressing events as diverse as weddings, companies' parties, Epsom races and Windsor events! They really are looking for people, and I've got two training sessions planned, tomorrow and the day after. So unless I break a plate, I should be able to choose between two companies.
I'm also looking for a real job for September, and I've been invited to my first interview. It starts with tests in an assesment centre, and if everything worked out fine, it would be a graduate traineeship in market research.
Oh, and I need to find a dissertation topic. I've got a very good supervisor, I just need to figure out what I want to talk about...

France!

Coucou! Je serai de retour en France du 4 au 11 juillet :-)!!! Donc s'il y du monde sur Saint-Louis, sur Strasbourg ou pas trop loin à ces dates, faites-moi signe!!!

Merci beaucoup pour tous les voeux d'anniversaire :-)!!!! Ca m'a remonté le moral, nettement plus que les théories du nationalisme et l'enlargement de l'UE ;-)! Je répondrai aux emails, mais ça va prendre un certain temps, donc je m'excuse d'avance... 8 mai date limite pour mes disserts, donc je devrais revivre après!!!

Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes :-)!!! It cheered me up much more than theories of nationalism and the European enlargement ;-)! I'll answer every email, but it's gonna take some time, so I apologize for that... The 8th of May is my deadline for exams, so I should start living again afterwards!!!
